Rangers head to the land of goulash on Euro duty this week.

But while their Premiership hopes might still be in the soup Danny Rohl’s side did at least serve up something to warm their success-starved supporters on a freezing night in Ayrshire. Three Scottish Premiership points. And with Bojan Miovski producing a double to put the chef’s kiss on a solid night’s work.

The North Macedonian scored either side of the break to double the tally he’d netted in his first 19 games, a run that had huge question marks hanging over the ex-Aberdeen frontman’s head. Rohl will be hoping this performance can get the 26-year-old cooking.

Not just that but the sight of Mikey Moore climbing off the bench after returning from injury to put the gloss on the win with another classy finish will have Rangers. fans believing maybe their side could be about to come to the boil too.

Rangers move level third, six points off the leaders. For Killie though it’s now nine without a win. Yet they could easily have gone ahead here. Towering Marcus Dackers got above Jayden Meghoma to head Scott Tiffoney’s cross just over after 12 minutes.

Connor Barron then got back to brilliantly clear Bruce Anderson’s effort off the line after the home striker dinked the onrushing Jack Butland with the Gers backline all at sea.

Rangers’ Mikey Moore

But out of nowhere Miovski prodded Rangers ahead in the 33rd minute. The North Macedonian looked to have missed his opportunity after opting not to shoot moments earlier but after Mo Diomande had worked the ball back into a congested box the former Aberdeen man caught Tobi Oluwayemi unsighted as he poked into the bottom corner.

Rangers doubled their lead on 54 minutes. Nico Raskin drove in off the left and slotted a perfect ball into Miovski who took one touch inside and wrong footed Oluwayemi with a clever finish. Jack Butland blocked Anderson’s half volley that deflected right in front of the keeper as VAR deemed it a good tackle.

Things were getting tense. For both sides. And it all got too much for Killie boss Stuart Kettlewell who was red carded by Kevin Clancy for booting a water bottle in frustration. His temper wouldn’t have been helped in the stand when Butland was given the benefit of the doubt moments later after racing out his box and clattering through Anderson after Barron’s short passback.

And Moore sub Moore put the game to bed on 81 minutes. Raskin won the ball and fed Meghoma whose pass released Moore to roll Lewis Mayo and bend a wonderful effort into the far corner. Moore could have had a second moments later too. But his deft finish four a fourth was ruled out for a foul by Fernandez on Watson in the build-up.

Here’s 5 talking points from Rugby Park.

Is that Miovski?

Bojan Miovski has been desperate for lift off on his Gers career after a barren run that had brought just two goals in 19 previous appearances. The North Macedonian has shown none of the spark that made him one of the Premiership’s deadliest frontmen at Aberdeen. But this might just be the spark. His opener was all about striker’s instinct as he poked home in a congested area. No time to think just pure reaction. Maybe he’s been overthinking things. HIs second was a confident, clinical and classy finish as he wrong-footed Oluwayemi. Rohl will be hoping the double is exactly what the man who could eventually cost £4.2m through add ons needs to get firing.

Plastic not quite fantastic

This Danny Rohl’s first game on an artificial surface since he was an academy coach at Leipzig a decade ago.

It wasn’t quite plastic fantastic. But it will more than do for a side that had looked bereft of confidence and quality in recent outings. The away support belting out the German’s name for long spells in the second half told the story of a decent night’s work.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland dives at the feet of Kilmarnock’s Bruce Anderson

Rangers deserved the win over the piece, in Miovski they had the one clinician in front of goal. But after getting two ahead they still failed to control the victory without nervy moments. Indeed had it not been for a superb Jack Butland save midway through the second half Killie could have found themselves right back in the game. Nassr Djiga and Manny Fernandez continue to look nervous at the back. But the introduction of Moore and his classy goal to secure the points meant Gers eventually eased to the three points.

Nine not fine

Not an evening to remember for Stuart Kettlewell who was constantly in the fourth official’s ear and eventually saw red after blootering a water bottle in frustration.

Killie were eight without a victory heading into this but their resilience to snatch a late point away to leaders Hearts in midweek felt as good as a win and had confidence sweeping back into Stuart Kettlewell’s players.

They started with a four at the back four, looked comfortable in their shape and caused Rangers problems with Bruce Anderson’s industry and Marcus Dackers’ height. But Miovski’s opener appeared to knock the wind from their sails. They rallied after the break and were unlucky not to cut the deficit through Anderson before Rangers picked them off. But the sight of Killie sitting level 11th will have alarm bells ringing loud and clear.

Moore the merrier

Rangers injury woes might have looked to have got worse when Nedim Bajrami limped off after just 20 minutes with what appeared to be a hamstring issue. But the sight of Mikey Moore climbing off the bench for his first appearance in a month would have been warming. Not half as much as his goal that put the gloss on the win. His turn and bending finish was quality and another example of what’s been lacking in the final third for Gers in recent weeks. The Spurs teenager was desperately unlucky to see another brilliant finish ruled out for Fernandez’s foul moments later too.

Late night turn off

The arrival of the 8pm Saturday night kick offs for Sky TV have been as popular as that cheeky Killie fan that joined the Ayr United youth team’s lap of honour at Somerset Park last week.

And again the impact it has on the home attendance at Rugby Park was there for all to see. Large swathes of all three home stands remained empty in full view of the TV cameras. Not a great look for your game. The away end was packed, as you’d expect. But punters at the Premiership’s other clubs are voting with their feet. It’s hard to see who benefits.Rangers
