Tesco has issued a recall notice for a popular party food due to concerns that it may pose a “possible health risk” to individuals with allergies. Tesco 6 Aubergine Katsu Bao Buns were found to contain milk not mentioned on the label, which could trigger symptoms in anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

Around one in 50 babies suffer from allergies to cow’s milk, although most outgrow it during childhood. Up to one in 10 adults is thought to be lactose intolerant, meaning their body cannot digest the sugar found in milk products.

The recall applies to Tesco 6 Aubergine Katsu Bao Buns sole in a 258g pack with use by dates up to and including December 13.

A notice issued by Tesco said: “If you have purchased the affected date code of the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, please return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.”

The Food Standards Agency said Tesco had contacted relevant allergy support organisations to notify their members about the recall.

Symptoms of a milk allergy include hives, swelling, vomiting, and breathing difficulties, which typically occur within a few minutes of consumption.

Allergies can sometimes be treated with antihistamine drugs and managed by avoiding milk products.

In serious cases, exposure to milk can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include breathing issues such as wheezing, throat tightness and fast breathing, skin changes and circulation problems, which can cause dizziness and fainting.

Milk allergies can suddenly develop in adulthood but this is very rare, according to Allergy UK.
