Alan Barker took this photo while walking his dog along the shore yesterday.

The aquatic mammal, believed to be a common dolphin, has been wrapped in a blue and white plastic tape by the coastguard.

It is understood that the dolphin washed up after it died at sea.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust spokesperson said residents can report animals being stranded to the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) here: http://ukstrandings.org/how-to-report-a-stranding/

They advised people to avoid touching the animal and to make sure to wash your hands if any contact is made.
