Coronation Street viewers are bracing themselves for a potentially devastating twist involving Ken Barlow’s future on the show.

The iconic character, portrayed by Bill Roache, has been a cornerstone of the cobbles since first appearing in 1960, when the actor was just 28 years old – quickly becoming a beloved figure amongst viewers.

As the programme’s longest-running character, Ken has featured in numerous major storylines over the decades. From his own mysterious assault to his extensive romantic history, Ken’s life in Weatherfield has been nothing if not eventful.

Yet fans are now concerned that a tragic death storyline could be looming for Ken after noticing a concerning clue in Monday night’s episode (December 8).

In the latest instalment, Ken and his daughter Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) had an emotional conversation, during which Tracy confessed she’d been taking his wellbeing for granted, reports the Daily Star.

Ken reminded her that “time is a precious thing” to which Tracy responded: “You’re right. And from now on, we’re going to spend as much time together as we can.” Ken replied: “Nothing will please me more.”

Following this poignant exchange between Ken and Tracy about mortality and cherishing their remaining time together, fans are speculating wildly that it could be foreshadowing Ken’s exit from the soap.

On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one viewer wrote: “Anyone else get the feeling Ken is going to pass away in his chair? The way he and Tracy said “let’s start tomorrow”. RIP Ken.”

One viewer commented: “Yes I thought the same.” Another agreed: “I did wonder the same.” A third person shared: “Yes that’s what ive been thinking too.” Yet another viewer remarked: “l got goose bumps on that scene. Not just what they said but how they said it.”

CorrieFans would be devastated to see the icon go

Earlier this year, Bill, who plays Ken, spoke about his future on the programme after receiving another accolade to add to his distinguished career. The television icon was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at The Entertainment Agents’ Awards (TEAA) in March.

Reflecting on the recognition, Bill told the Champions Speakers Agency: “It’s a huge honour to receive this award, and I am very grateful for it.

“I’ve enjoyed a wonderful career and to have spent so many years working on such a special programme like Coronation Street has been magical. I’ve been fortunate to work with some absolutely incredible actors over that period and made a lifetime of memories. I’m looking forward to being in the programme for many more years to come.”
