Emily Nussbaum has been named theatre critic at The New Yorker

A Pulitzer Prize winner for her TV writing, Nussbaum has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 2011 and started her career at the publication as a TV critic. In recent years, she’s written profiles on Keri Russell, Marielle Heller and Fiona Apple in addition to reporting on topics such as country music and Love Is Blind.

Nussbaum is also the author of two books Cue The Sun!: The Invention of Reality TV, which was published last year and I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution.

She takes over the role as Helen Shaw moves over to the New York Times to take on the chief theater critic role. Jesse Green, who had been chief theater critic since 2020 and co-chief since 2017, has now been a culture correspondent at the paper since September.

In addition to Nussbaum, The New Yorker announced the hiring of Jason Zengerle from the Times magazine and Ruby Cramer from The Washington Post as staff writers covering politics. Jon Allsop, who led the daily newsletter at the Columbia Journalism Review, is joining as a contributing writer.
