One of the clubs in the expanded rugby league Championship have confirmed that they’re exploring the options of playing games away from their home stadium.

The Championship will have a new look to it in 2026 as the second and third tiers of English rugby league combine to create a 21-team competition, though uncertainty remains over that given the fact Salford Red Devils and Featherstone Rovers face races to be financially viable ahead of the new campaign.

It’s set to be Salford who open the season up on Friday, 16th January and just two days later, Sheffield Eagles will take on Whitehaven away from home.

They don’t play their first home game until Saturday, 21st February with that game being listed as being played at the Steel City Stadium but the club have now come out and confirmed that there remains uncertainty over where they will play their matches in 2026.

Sheffield Eagles considering taking home games elsewhere in 2026

The Eagles were one of the Championship teams who delayed in their release of season tickets, understandably not wanting to sell fans short if the financially-stricken sides of Salford and Featherstone were unable to compete.

Craig Lingard’s side have since released their season tickets and they’ve launched them with an impressive offer of a free 2026 home shirt included for those who purchase before Thursday, 8th January.

A season ticket will set adult fans back £150 and gain them access to “every home fixture” with 12 slated for the regular season in the league.

However, where those games will be played is still somewhat up in the air with the Eagles admitting that they are still exploring options to take games away from their home ground.

They explained: “With the fixture list now confirmed, Sheffield Eagles are working to secure venues for the season and are exploring the possibility of playing some games at the MEPS International Home Of Football Stadium, Sheffield FC’s home ground, as well as the Steel City Stadium, with a view to improving the match day experience for the fans after feedback from supporters during the 2025 season. More information will be provided once confirmed.”

The grounds are both based in Sheffield and are only eight miles apart but with the season just around the corner, fans will have to wait a while longer to find out exactly where each home game will be played in 2026.
