A Welsh council has issued an urgent warning to residents following reports of fraudulent text messages circulating across the county.

Powys County Council has said it has been made aware of a series of scam messages claiming recipients have received a parking fine. The texts instruct people to click on a link to pay the alleged penalty.

Residents are strongly advised not to click on the link, as the messages are fraudulent and may be used to steal personal or financial information.

The council has confirmed that all legitimate parking fines in Powys are administered by the Wales Penalty Processing Partnership.

Neither the Wales Penalty Processing Partnership nor Powys County Council will contact individuals by text message about parking fines, the council said in a statement.

Anyone who receives one of these messages is advised to delete it immediately and remain vigilant against unexpected payment requests.
