John Cena takes on Gunther in his final match.
WWE
WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event emanates from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. as John Cena takes on Gunther in his final match. The odds have shifted in Cena’s favorite since they were released, and now that the smart money is pouring in, Cena is down to a +170 underdog as opposed to +350.
Cody Rhodes has ballooned to a stronger favorite at -600 against Oba Femi after Oba’s show-stealing promo to kick off SmackDown. Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater are also bigger underdogs (-650) after Je’Von picked up a singles win over former two-time WWE champion the Miz, while Sol Ruca is actually a slight favorite over Bayley.
John Cena’s retirement show is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. It is far from a status quo show. If these NXT vs. WWE showcases produces status quo results, it would be quite disappointing for the show and Cena’s best wishes of seeing the next generation of WWE Superstars thrive. In WWE’s mind, a young star thriving means going 50/50 with a veteran before losing. “Keep you’re eye on that kid,” they always say, patronizingly.
So boring.
With WWE in a very static and predictable period headed into WrestleMania 42 season, they can use a show with some surprising results that elevate future talent ready for a main event spot.

Cody Rhodes Ends In A DQ As Drew McIntyre Attacks CodyWWE Saturday Night’s Main Event started with Joe Tessitore and Stephanie McMahon welcoming the Capital One Arena to John Cena’s final match. Of course, Stephanie McMahon is a fixture in John Cena lore as she heard him freestyling on the back of a bus and asked if he could be a rapper as part of his on-camera gimmick. The rest is history. Michael Cole and Wade Barrett were on commentary as Cody Rhodes made his way to the ring on an impressive stage. Oba Femi walked out next with all the aura of a future WrestleMania main eventer. Fans barked and chanted “Oba” in anticipation of his entrance with Cody standing in the ring. Fans chanted for Oba Femi early on, but these chants were eventually overtaken by Cody Rhodes chants. A truly electric atmosphere, and not just as a WWE buzzword. There were loud chants of “let’s go Oba!” as Femi stopped Cody from his patented uppercut and answered with a backbreaker. Oba Femi methodically dominated Cody Rhodes as Cody started to fight back. Fans were now dueling between chants for Cody and Oba. Oba continued to dominate as he delivered a one-armed backbreaker. At this point, Femi was toying with Cody. Wade Barrett described it as a “walk in the park.” Rhodes sent Femi flying into the turnbuckle shoulder-first followed by a powerslam. Fans were evenly split with their support, but they didn’t boo anybody. Rhodes hit a Cody Cutter for a nearfall. Rhodes started to feel it as he dumped Femi to the outside and hit a suicide dive. Oba Femi raced back in the ring and hit a spinebuster on Cody Rhodes for a nearfall. Femi stared Cody down as Rhodes recovered on the outside, There was no rest for the weary as Femi hit a running European uppercut on Cody. Cody was bleeding from the ear after this spot. The dueling chants continued as Cody hit an Avalanche Cody Cutter. Femi kicked out. Drew McIntyre hit the ring and pummeled Rhodes for the DQ finish. Terrible. A furious Oba Femi stared down Drew McIntyre and pushed him on his backside. Rhodes followed up with a Cody Cutter, followed by an Oba Chokeslam on McIntyre. As spineless as this finish was, Oba was showcased and he got over huge. Oba Femi vs. Cody Rhodes Match Grade: B-Sol Ruca Def. BayleySol Ruca walked out to the ring alongside Zaria, which planted the seeds of a heel turn in the minds of anybody who has been following their tense NXT storyline in recent weeks. Fans weren’t as familiar with Sol Ruca as they were with Oba Femi. Ruca and Bayley started out with some mat work, but Sol impressively rolled out of a hammerlock as fans oohed and ahed. Sol once again showed off by walking on her hands and transitioning into a headscissors takedown on Bayley. Ruca hit an X-Factor forcing Bayley to roll out of the ring after a hot start from Sol. Ruca did more handstands on the apron before coming up empty with a dive to the outside, allowing Bayley to take control. Fans got behind Sol Ruca as she came back with a roundoff backflip to the outside of the ring. It was perfectly executed. There were light “let’s go Ruca” chants as Bayley grounded Ruca in the ring. Sol Ruca battled back with strikes to the back of the neck and a pair of flying elbows. Bayley caught Sol Ruca in midair with a Bayley-to-Belly for a nearfall. Bayley went for the Roseplant, but Ruca escaped and caught her with a running knee for a nearfall of her own. Ruca went for the Sol Snatcher, but Bayley countered with the Roseplant. Ruca got her foot on the rope as Cole talked up her long legs. Bayley went for a flying elbow but Ruca blocked it with her knees. Sol followed up with a Sol Snatcher. Bayley went for the rollup, but Sol countered the rollup for the biggest win of her career. After the match, Bayley shook Sol’s hand and raised her hand. Sol Ruca Vs. Bayley Match Grade: B+AJ Styles And Dragon Lee Def. Je’Von Evans And Leon Slater Of course, Je’Von and Leon got out of the brakes quickly as they pounced on (and bounced on) the tag team champions. Je’Von Evans was over with this crowd, but they chanted for AJ Styles as Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater teamed up on Dragon Lee. Lee hit a sitout power bomb as he dragged himself over to Styles for the hot tag. Styles got the better of Evans with a Ushigoroshi on Evans. Evans went for a dive to the outside but missed. Lee hit a flying rana on Slater, who flew into a Styles Clash attempt. Evans blocked the move on the outside and followed up with an OG Cutter on Styles. Fans chanted “this is awesome” as Slater connected with a Swanton 450 splash for a nearfall. Now it was Dragon Lee’s turn to fly, and he did just that with a dive to the outside on Evans. Slater fought out of a Styles Clash but ate a forearm from Styles. Styles slipped on the top rope while attempting the Phenomenal Forearm, and Slater immediately pinned him for a nearfall. Slater followed up with a dive, but Styles caught him in midair for the Style Clash for the win. AJ Styles and Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater: B+Joe Hendry Def. The Miz In An Impromptu MatchThe Miz was in the ring—full gear—to cut a promo on John Cena and WWE. Miz was frustrated with WWE focusing on the new and up-and-coming Superstars. Miz wore the same gear he wore to defeat John Cena at WrestleMania 27. Miz demanded respect, and out came R-Truth to a gigantic pop. R-Truth said Miz did something inappropriate with Nick Aldis’ balls. Truth showed Miz a lottery ball with a name in it. It was Joe Hendry. Huge pop. Joe Hendry appeared and Miz was incensed. Fans sang and clapped to Hendry’s theme music. Miz shoved R-Truth and Hendry unloaded with strikes and a fallaway Slam. Hendry did a kip up as both he and Truth performed his iconic pose. Hendry hit his Standing Ovation finisher and pinned The Miz as R-Truth made the unofficial three count. Joe Hendry Vs. The Miz (Feat. R-Truth) Match Grade: AGunther Submits John Cena in Cena’s Last MatchMichael Cole noted that John Cena has not tapped out in 20 years, and he has never lost in the Capital One Arena. Fans booed Gunther but enthusiastically sang along to Cena’s theme music. Cena turned the tables and filmed Stu before running to the ring one last time. Cena greeted legends and WWE Hall of Famers ringside, including Elias who won the “one of these things is not like the other” award for the night. Gunther started out dominant as fans were all over him. D.C. chanted “a—hole,” “F-U Gunther” and “you tapped out” all in the span of two minutes. Unbothered, Gunther continued his slow, methodical offense in Cena’s last match. Cena battled back and hit a Five Knuckle Shuffle early in the match. Gunther quickly got back into the match with a clothesline. Gunther fought out of an STFU and hit a running dropkick. Gunther then hit a powerbomb as fans once again chanted “F-U Gunther!” Gunther slowed the match down with multiple clotheslines as fans booed hysterically. Cena rallied with his patented comeback and a second Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena hit the AA, but only for a nearfall. Gunther locked in a sleeper hold, but Cena countered with a sleeper of his own. Gunther fought to the ropes and took over the match when the action spilled to the outside. Back inside the ring, Cena delivered one last “you can’t see me” taunt before running into a big boot and a powerbomb. Cena kicked out. Cena then countered a splash attempt with a Super AA. Cena tapped out to Gunther via sleeper hold as fans booed. Fans chanted “B.S.” and “you f—ked up” as Triple H led the roster to the ring. For more details of John Cena’s final match, click here.
