Celebrity Gogglebox viewers were left scratching their heads after a TikTok video appeared to confirm David Tennant and his wife were filmed in someone else’s living room. The clip, shared by a TikTok user, showed a family watching the Doctor Who star on the TV, while sitting on the sofa he was filmed on.

The video was captioned: “Cinematic experience: Us watching Gogglebox that was filmed on this sofa, whilst sitting on this sofa.” It showed a group watching the 54-year-old actor and his wife, Georgia, showing a clip of a semi-detached house, while exclaiming how bizarre it was to see it on television.

But fans were left with more questions than answers after watching the clip, with some speculating over the truth behind the show. The Channel 4 programme, which aired on Friday night in support of Stand Up To Cancer, purports to show celebs relaxing in their own homes while commenting on recent TV shows.

TikTok users pondered what the reality of the show is, with one commenting: “So they filmed it at a different house to keep their real house location a secret. Clever.”

Another replied: “Most of David’s house can be seen on the ‘staged’ show him and Michael Sheen did, its no secret.” A third asked: “So they borrow houses to sit in??” Someone else speculated: “I think they’ve just used a shot of a random house so viewers don’t actually get to know where the celebs live??”

But while Channel 4 often shows celebs in houses they claim to be their own, a location agency previously revealed its secrets. As reported last year by OK! magazine, London location agency 1st Option confirmed that homes are often rented by the producers for security purposes.

Viewers previously had their suspicions raised when billionaire Peter Jones was filmed with fellow Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden in a semi-detached house in London. Locations director Sophia told the magazine: “The producers of Gogglebox contacted me a few weeks ago, asking if we could source them locations for the celebs.

“Of course, we got to work straight away and everything moved quickly from there. We made sure to provide Channel 4 with luxury locations, which would be believable that the celebrities could live there.

“Channel 4 booked locations for celebs such as Little Mix, Professor Green and Example, as well as Bananarama. Little Mix shot in our location home, Metallica, Professor Green and Example filmed in Onyx and Bananarama went to our shoot location, Florence.”

Meanwhile, Gogglebox cast member and writer Gyles Brandreth also let slip some BTS secrets about the way Gogglebox is filmed. The former broadcaster and writer told Esther Rantzen’s podcast That’s After Life that a crew controls the set-up cameras from another room in the house.

He explained: “They come to your house at the beginning, and they set up the camera in the room and then go away for two months. The cameras are permanently in the room, and you genuinely forget they are there; they’re small, discreet cameras.

“Then at set times you go in, and you press the button, and they don’t give you a choice over the programmes, you watch the ones they select for you, but you’re alone in the building and that lulls you into that false state of relaxation.”

Stacey Solomon also revealed another trick producers use to film the show, addressing why it always looks like it’s filmed at night. Writing on Instagram. she said: “Now we are filming Gogglebox, they black (the windows) all out because it’s too bright outside. Grandad is on pickle watch, but right now he’s just eating our snacks.”
