A cyclist was taken to hospital after suffering “potentially serious injuries” during a cyclo-cross event. Mountain rescue teams were called to assist the North East Ambulance Service near Kirkley, Northumberland, shortly before 11am on Sunday.
It was reported that a competitor had been involved in a fall while descending a slope, and event medics requested assistance due to concerns about a potential serious injury.
Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team’s Key Mobile responded to the incident alongside North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and the cyclist was carried on a stretcher approximately 500m back to the event car park. The patient was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment.
A spokesperson for Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team said: “Team members were quickly on scene and worked alongside a North East Ambulance Service crew who were already assessing the casualty. Our vehicle was able to access the casualty site, allowing specialist equipment to be brought directly to the scene.
“Once sufficient personnel were in place, the casualty was carefully transferred using appropriate immobilisation equipment before being carried a few 100 metres to the awaiting ambulance. The incident involved 21 team members for three hours eight minutes.”
A spokesperson for North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team said: “The first team members were on scene within 45 minutes, working alongside the ambulance crew to assess the casualty and plan a safe evacuation.
“The casualty was given pain relief, carefully packaged in a vacuum mattress and winter casualty bag, and placed onto a Bell stretcher. They were then carried approximately 500m back to the event car park and transferred to the waiting ambulance. We wish the casualty a very speedy recovery.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 10.47am on Sunday 14 December to reports of a person injured at a cycling event at a property in Thorneyford in Kirkley. We dispatched an ambulance crew and requested support from our colleagues at the mountain rescue team. One patient was taken to the RVI for further treatment.”
