With just days to go until Christmas, it’s safe to say the party season is already well underway. Extra meals out, richer foods and more drinks than usual are all part of the festive fun, but they can also leave many people feeling uncomfortable.

Speaking on Lorraine, Dr Hilary Jones acknowledged that it’s a common issue at this time of year, explaining that people often visit their GP saying their ‘bowel habit has changed’, which isn’t surprising given how differently we tend to eat over Christmas.

Dr Hilary pointed out that richer foods can easily lead to bloating and constipation, especially as the weeks go on. While he stressed that it’s always best to avoid problems where possible, he did highlight a supplement option for those already feeling the effects of festive overindulgence.

He mentioned a product called Debloat & Detox by Dr Vegan. The supplement costs £18.99 as a one-time purchase for one pouch, which works out at around 65p a day from the Dr Vegan site when taken over a month.

The TV doctor told Lorraine today (December 15): “There’s something called Dr Vegan’s Debloat & Detox, which contains things like artichoke leaf extract and milk thistle, which are traditionally meant to be good for the gall bladder, botanicals, amino acids. “

Debloat & Detox is designed to support digestion after eating, promote liver health and help the body process toxins, the brand says. The formula combines a blend of botanicals and amino acids, including Milk Thistle (2,500mg), Silymarin, Fennel, Dandelion, Burdock and L-Glutamine.

Ingredients such as artichoke are known for their antioxidant properties and are traditionally used to support digestion, intestinal function and the liver’s natural detox processes, the site says. The capsules are simple to take as users are advised to take two capsules per day, either together or separately, with or after main meals, or before consuming alcohol.

The brand recommends sticking to the suggested intake for best results. However, Dr Vegan isn’t the only brand offering a product that combats bloating. LookFantastic also has The Nue Co. Debloat and Prebiotic Bundle for £98, which offers ‘two dietary supplements’ that contain digestive enzymes, prebiotics and probiotics, according to the site.

Boots also has the Artah, Digest + Debloat Tincture 100ml for £32 on its website. These are intended to supplement the diet, according to the website, and are said to be perfect for before or after a meal.

Back to Dr Vegan, hundreds of customers have shared their experiences with the Debloat & Detox supplement. One person, Carolyn wrote: “Definitely help with digestion and lessen feelings of bloating, after my evening meal… Take them religiously!!!”

Another user, Nicki said: “I have suffered with IBS symptoms for a year now and in one month my bloating and constipation has almost gone – I’ve had one or two instances this month compared to every single day. It is quite pricey but it compares well to other similar products and the ingredients are natural and high quality. I can’t imagine I’ll ever stop taking them.”

However, not every product is suited to everyone and another shopper said: “I used this for 30 days and found no difference. On a positive, despite the capsules being large, they are easy to swallow.”

Overall most people were pleased, however, as Melanie said: “Less bloating and stomach pain after eating, and no uncomfortable, hard full tummy that made it impossible to do sit ups. I will be repeating the order when it comes to renewal and have been really impressed.”
