Newcastle Thunder have secured the signing of Joe Law from Super League new boys York Knights.
Law has penned a deal for the 2026 season, with Newcastle striving to rebuild and compete in the Championship after a difficult year in League 1.
Last week, the Thunder secured the signings of Bailey Antrobus and Sam Cook from York, who the club remain partnered with, and Law has made the same switch. The club have also signed former Hull KR man Leo Tennison this week as they prepare themselves for the start of the Championship season.
Law, who is still only 21, came through the ranks at Wakefield Trinity and made his Super League debut for the club during a win over Leeds Rhinos in 2023. He joined York Knights on an initial loan in 2024, after a spell with Hunslet, and he impressed enough to earn a permanent deal with Mark Applegarth’s side ahead of last season.
He made nine appearances for the Knights last year and scored three tries. The outside back will be keen to build on that in the north east for the side that finished the season winless at the foot of the League 1 table last season.
Head coach Graham Steadman said on his latest recruit: “Joe’s experience, versatility and commitment are major assets both on and off the field.
“He’s a young man with a good attitude and the experience of playing in the north east will stand him in good stead. I am excited to have him in Thunder colours next season.”
As a club, Newcastle have been through the wringer over the last few years. Citing the impact of Covid and the low level of regional development in the game, the Thunder pulled themselves out of the 2024 League 1 season before being revived by Keith Christie.
Since then the club have struggled for traction on the field, while they have also been forced to move their home ground to Crow Trees Ground, the home of local rugby union outfit Blaydon RFC.
