Eddie Howe fears he could be without Tino Livramento for part of the festive period after a fresh injury blow for the full-back.
Livramento fell awkwardly at St James’ Park and was replaced by youngster Alex Murphy in the final 15 minutes of the Carabao Cup tie. As he left the field he looked in pain during the lap of appreciation with a bandage wrapped around his left leg.
The England defender had missed 10 matches earlier this season after being hospitalised following an injury against Arsenal.
After the game Howe said: “It doesn’t look good. The fact he came off is a worrying sign and we’re so stretched in that area it would be a problem.”
Howe then added in his Press conference: “We don’t know how bad it is but it doesn’t look good. The fact he had to come off when he’s such an honest lad is a worrying sign for his participation against Chelsea.”
One option for Howe at right-back could now be Lewis Miley who performed well against Fulham at right-back. Speaking on Miley’s performance, Howe said: “Brilliant performance from a talented young player.
“He hasn’t played right-back a lot and had to take on a lot of information this morning so he did really well.
“He’s here on merit, he believes that he’s more than good enough to play at this level. Not just play but excel and he’s taking his game to another level and I think we’re seeing that now.”

Howe had confirmed before the game that Lewis Hall was injured with a fresh injury blow. The left-back has suffered a minor hamstring injury.
Newcastle are already without defenders Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Emil Krafth and Dan Burn. The latter was hospitalised on Sunday after suffering rib and lung damage against Sunderland.
Trippier, Krafth and Burn won’t be fit until the new year although it is hoped Botman may return earlier.
Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles has returned to training after a hamstring injury. The former club captain could come into contention over the festive period.
Howe was forced to call up 18-year-old right back Leo Shahar for the Fulham tie. The England youth international was named on the bench alongside Murphy and young striker Sean Neave as the United squad continues to look thin on numbers.
