Live performances from legendary acts including Marc Almond, Chesney Hawkes and ABC will take place in The Square on August 26.

Promoter Karl Diamond spoke of his excitement about bringing the event to the city.

“We’re proud to introduce our very first dedicated 80s night as part of Live at The Square.

“The festival is only in its second year, and the response has been incredible. Bringing legends like Marc Almond, ABC and ‘The One and Only’ Chesney Hawkes to Ebrington Square is a real milestone for us, and we can’t wait to see thousands of fans celebrating the music that shaped a generation.”

Renowned for kicking-starting the 80s with their own brand of pop, ABC, led by charismatic frontman Martin Fry, are best known for their polished blend of pop, soul, and orchestral elements.

One of the defining acts of the decade, their 1982 debut album, The Lexicon of Love, is considered a landmark of the era, producing major hits such as ‘The Look of Love’, ‘Poison Arrow’ and ‘All of My Heart.’

Internationally acclaimed artist Marc Almond has inspired a generation of musicians, both as a solo star and as one half of electro duo Soft Cell.

With over 38 million records sold worldwide, his influence continues to be seen and heard with a career spanning six decades and including hits such as ‘Tainted Love’, ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’ and ‘Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart’.

Chesney Hawkes became one of the biggest pop stars of his era with his anthemic hit, which has since had well over 100 million streams across digital platforms.

A constant presence on the touring circuit and a feel-good performer, Hawkes recently supported James Blunt on his sell-out tour of Europe and is fresh from his first headline tour in over a decade.

Speaking ahead of The One and Only 80s Night, he said: “I’m so excited to come to Derry next summer and it’s an absolute honour to be sharing the bill with absolute legends such as ABC and Marc Almond. It’s bound to be an unforgettable night, and I know the crowd are going to bring the energy.”
