The legendary cook was a judge on the BBC’s Great British Bake Off between 2010 and 2016 before it left for Channel 4.

She has lived in Henley, in the south of Oxfordshire, with her husband, Paul Hunnings, since 2019.

The 90-year-old left viewers stunned earlier this week during her Christmas special on the BBC, A Mary Berry Christmas.

Whilst speaking with Zoe Ball, Dame Mary recalled a festive airport incident which left her husband Paul angered.

She said: “One year, my son was in Australia for Christmas, and we went to join him, and I took the stockings, and I took the satsumas, and at customs, I was drawn to one side, and they said you are not allowed to import fruit into Australia.

“My husband was so cross with me. He really gets cross with me.”

Ms Ball, shocked by the tale, said: “I bet you were mortified.”

Dame Mary explained that she had only wanted to keep the festive tradition alive, but admitted that she would “never do it again”.

“I said I didn’t know, and we’re going to arrive, and I want it to be traditional,” she said.

“But I was reprimanded, I’ll never do it again.”

The 90-year-old recently opened up about her spouse’s health while speaking at an event during Yeovil Literary Festival.

Dame Mary said: “I am lucky to have him because so many of my girlfriends have not got their husbands. But I have got one. He is forgetful, but he is lovely.

“I am rarely away for the night, but when I am, my darling daughter will be there to cook his supper and keep an eye that he doesn’t topple over because he is 93.”
