Trailer for Mandy Moore and Nate Bargatze’s comedy sparks fierce backlash as viewers slam ‘tired premise’

Mandy Moore and Nate Bargatze’s new film promises a family comedy, but social media users have already declared it an insult to stay-at-home dads.

The Breadwinner, slated for a March 2026 release, tells the story of Nate Wilcox, played by Bargatze, 46, and his wife Katie, played by Moore, 41.

After Katie is offered a business opportunity after appearing on Shark Tank, Nate is tasked with taking care of their three daughters without her help as she goes on a month-long business trip.

After a new trailer was released, many social media users slammed the ‘tired premise’ and expressed their irritation over the poor representation of stay-at-home fathers.

‘As a millennial dad, this isn’t it,’ declared one user.

‘As a dad-of-three, I hate this s**t. Why do we have to s**t on dads in every movie and TV show?’ asked another.

‘This would’ve slapped in 2006,’ a third sarcastically said.

‘We’re well past thinking it’s funny to portray all dads as incompetent,’ complained someone else.

‘I’m sorry, but this is so 50 years ago,’ a sixth user said.

‘I liked this better when Michael Keaton was in it,’ joked another, referring to the 1983 film Mr. Mom.

‘Another one bites the dust with a weak script and tired premise,’ declared someone else. 

Other people said they hoped it sheds light on how much work motherhood really is.

‘A lot of people saying this is weaponized incompetence, but I think the underlying main idea is how much moms take care of behind-the-scenes that no one sees,’ one user wrote. ‘Maybe more dads will realize it after this movie.’

Will Forte, Colin Jost, Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Cherry, Martin Herlihy and Kate Berlant also star in the upcoming film.

Bargatze is known for his stand-up comedy, but The Breadwinner will be his first feature film. It’s also the comedian’s first project since hosting the Emmy Awards in September, to mixed reviews.

Moore’s most recent notable role was in the NBC drama, This Is Us, which she starred in for six seasons.

In January, Moore lost her family’s home in Altadena, California, to the devastating LA wildfires.  

She recently reflected on the challenging year in a heartfelt post shared to social media.

‘It’s been a pretty wild and difficult year, but the top line is definitely overwhelming gratitude,’ Moore wrote.

Moore has also been in the public eye thanks to her changing appearance, with fans noticing her face seemed slimmer and her makeup style had changed in recent months.

Instead of the usual soft pinks and nudes that she favors in her usual lipstick shades, Moore went for a bright red lip and a dramatically dark eye and brow. 

Fans were shocked when the singer stepped out for the Inspiration Awards in Hollywood last month, saying she looked totally different.

‘I refuse to believe that this is her!’ one person wrote in a comment shared online.

Another added, ‘It’s not even the signs of aging that surprise me, it’s the fact that this person doesn’t look like Mandy Moore whatsoever.’
