Carlos Alcaraz has followed through on his promise to mark his 2025 US Open triumph with a new tattoo – even if it meant defying his parents. The Spaniard claimed his sixth Grand Slam title in September, beating Jannik Sinner in four sets in a thrilling final at Flushing Meadows.
The victory not only earned Alcaraz a hefty £3.7million prize pot but also saw him reclaim the world No. 1 ranking from the Italian. He later revealed plans to celebrate the success by using a small portion of his winnings on not one, but two new tattoos. Alcaraz has developed a tradition of getting inked every time he wins a major, though he had previously promised his parents he would only do so after capturing a tournament for the first time.
Despite this year’s US Open being his second triumph in New York, the 22-year-old – who has admitted he once needed parental permission before getting a tattoo – unveiled fresh ink on his right arm in a social media post just before Christmas, titled, “My week lately.”
The latest additions feature two iconic New York City landmarks: the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. They join a growing collection that already includes a small strawberry to commemorate his maiden Wimbledon title in 2023 and an Eiffel Tower marking his first French Open victory in 2024.
Alcaraz’s tattoo tradition began after his breakthrough US Open victory in 2022, when he had “11.09.22” inked on his arm to mark the date of the final – a night he famously defeated Casper Ruud to claim his very first Grand Slam win. He also has the letters CCC on his forearm, which represent ‘cabeza, corazon y cojones’, Spanish for ‘head, heart and balls’ – a tribute to his grandfather.
After his victory at Roland Garros last year, Alcaraz was quizzed on his growing collection of tattoos. He admitted he had slightly misled his parents about just how often he planned to get inked.
“I told my parents just to calm them that it was just the first one in every major. But this is a really big moment,” he said. “Probably I’m going to put the date of this one next to last year’s. I have to discuss with them. The Eiffel Tower one, I didn’t do it yet but I will for sure. This one, I have to talk with them. A little one I can hide.”
Alcaraz was very clear about his tattoo plans after winning the US Open a few months ago. “I’m gonna do two things,” he said. “I had a bet at the beginning of the tournament: the Brooklyn Bridge, and obviously the Statue of Liberty. I’m gonna do both. And the date. Because this one is special. I have to get a tattoo twice.”
Last year, Alcaraz hinted that he would get another tattoo if he won Olympic gold in Paris – and he had already settled on the design. “Without a doubt, the rings with the date Paris 24, one hundred per cent,” he told Marca.
Those plans were ultimately shelved after Novak Djokovic beat him in the gold-medal match. Still, there is plenty of time for the youngster to make good on that idea, with the Los Angeles Olympics fast approaching – and, no doubt, many more Games ahead in his career.
