Kate Garraway reached the semi-finals of the debut Celebrity Traitors series earlier this year, narrowly missing out on the grand finale after being banished in a tense roundtable vote.

However, the Good Morning Britain host has now admitted that despite her achievements on the BBC show, her eldest child, 19-year-old daughter Darcey, had some reservations, especially after watching the first episode with her new friends at university.

Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe ahead of The Traitors returning to our screens on New Year’s Day, Kate said that although Darcey and her brother Billy are fans of the series, they found it slightly odd watching their mum take part.

The TV star explained: “So I did watch it with them, so I warned… they were like, ‘Oh, God, this is going to be so embarrassing’. So it aired just as Darcey was three weeks into starting university.

“Can you imagine? You’ve barely got up from the Freshers’ Week hangover, you’ve made a few tentative friends. You know, the whole thing’s all quite fragile.”

After confirming that her daughter had gone to live away from home for university, Kate shared that Darcey had planned to throw a Celebrity Traitors viewing party to “make some new friends” and celebrate her mum taking part in the show.

Kate continued: “So they had this big set-up in, whatever it is, the common room, all there waiting. She phoned me at the end of that first episode absolutely horrified, saying, ‘I cannot believe you’ve done this to me! First of all, what’s the deal with the hats?

“‘I’ve been telling you since primary school, they are preposterous. Will you please listen to me? Everybody’s laughing at me, and secondly, you’re up against Niko [Omilana] for banishment’.”

It turns out that the popular YouTuber and influencer was a favourite amongst Darcey’s university pals, leaving her torn about who to support during the first roundtable.

Kate recalled: “She’s like, ‘he is the single most popular person! They’re all obsessed with Niko’. I mean, we all are, he’s brilliant, isn’t he?

“But she said, ‘and I don’t know what to wish for, because I don’t really want you to be out, but also, if he’s out, no one, none of my friends are ever going to speak to me again’.”

To make matters worse, Darcey’s fellow students kept bringing her mum up into conversation with a sympathetic head tilt after tuning into more episodes.

Kate admitted: “And then, she said, for the whole of that week, everybody would do that slightly head-cock thing and go, ‘Hi, oh, nice to meet you! Oh, your mum…’ So that first week was, I think, quite torturous for her, but then she owned it.”

Kate previously praised the show for helping to change her perspective while grieving the loss of her husband Derek Draper, who sadly died in January 2024 after suffering a heart attack and various health complications from Covid.

She told her co-stars in a final farewell: “I think I’ve had quite a few years recently of being quite sad and have to be quite controlled and inward looking – and you’ve all made me feel a bit like I’m looking out.”
