This time six years ago, Toronto Wolfpack were preparing for their first season in Super League under Brian McDermott.
The Canadian outfit had sailed through the lower leagues before winning promotion to the top flight in 2019 and they went big as they prepared to make a splash in Super League. Sonny Bill Williams was the star signing but he was joined by the likes of Tony Gigot, Brad Singleton and James Cunningham at Lamport Stadium.
Unfortunately, those in Toronto never got to see a Super League game played on Canadian soil, with the club withdrawing from the competition and eventually folding due to the financial difficulties caused by the pandemic.
It meant that the Wolfpack’s stint in Super League lasted just six games with defeats coming in every league meeting. However, they did manage to win their last game before the season came to a halt due to Covid in March 2020 as they recorded an 18-0 win over Huddersfield Giants in the Challenge Cup.
Ricky Leutele scored twice on the night, with three penalties from Gareth O’Brien seeing Toronto progress to the last 16 of the competition.
Here, Serious About Rugby League takes a look at what became of the last Toronto Wolfpack line up.
What happened next to the last Toronto Wolfpack line-up
Full-back: Gareth O’Brien
O’Brien signed a temporary deal with Castleford Tigers when the Super League returned in August before joining the club on a three-year deal ahead of the 2021 season. He is now approaching his fourth season with Leigh Leopards, where he has won the Challenge Cup and made 77 appearances.

The Ireland international was Toronto’s first ever signing and he scored 66 tries in 70 appearances for the club. He joined Wakefield Trinity for the final months of the 2020 campaign before joining them permanently in the off-season and played 87 times before leaving the club following their promotion from the Championship to Super League.

He spent last year with Souths Logan Magpies but announced his retirement earlier this month.

Unfortunately, after two seasons with Salford, Mellor has gone through a similar situation with the Red Devils being liquidated earlier this month. The playmaker has now signed to spend 2026 with Bradford Bulls.

Another to join Leigh after the collapse of the Wolfpack. He went on to spend time with Salford and Oldham before wrapping up his career in December after spending last season with League One outfit Swinton Lions. He has now joined the St Helens scholarship programme as a coach.
Hooker: Andy Ackers
The number nine’s career was still building momentum when he arrived in Super League, having started at Swinton before joining London Broncos and Toronto. However, he joined Salford in June 2020 and really made a name for himself. He found the form needed to work his way up into the England squad for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.
He joined Leeds Rhinos ahead of the 2024 season but he made just 36 appearances for the club before it was confirmed in October that he had signed with Bradford Bulls ahead of their return to Super League.
Prop: Gadwin Springer
Springer has been around the block a few times since leaving Toronto. In 2021 he represented Halifax Panthers, Featherstone Rovers and Villeneuve Leopards before joining Toulouse Olympique for their 2022 Super League campaign.
He left to join Featherstone after making just five outings for Toulouse and over the last three and a half years he racked up 78 appearances for the club. He has penned a deal to play for Doncaster in 2026.
Second-row: Tom Olbison
Olbison had seen financial difficulties at Bradford Bulls and Widnes Vikings before he joined Toronto and at the age of 29, he quit the sport to become a train driver.
Second-row: Bodene Thompson
The New Zealander ended the 2020 season with Leeds Rhinos before joining the club on a two-year deal ahead of the 2021 season. He made 48 appearances for the Rhinos in total before joining Bradford Bulls in 2023. Thompson was last seen playing for Murwillumbah Mustangs in their 20-12 defeat to Marist Brothers in the 2025 NRRRL Grand Final.
Loose-forward: Andrew Dixon
Dixon joined Toulouse Olympique ahead of the 2021 season and helped them win promotion to Super League before re-joining Salford Red Devils in October 2022. However, he would make just 10 outings over the final two years of his career, including one appearance for Widnes Vikings, before retiring. He was appointed Oldham’s head of performance in September 2024.
Bench: Anthony Mullally
The former Leeds Rhinos man spent a year and a bit with the Wolfpack before signing with AS Carcassonne for the 2021-22 Super XIII season. He joined Cornwall ahead of the 2022 season but announced his retirement the following July. He currently works as a breathwork coach.
Bench: Darcy Lussick
Lussick joined Salford for the 2021 Super League season, but made just five appearances before joining Featherstone Rovers on loan. He recently became a father but his last outing in sport came in boxing, with the former prop losing by TKO to former NRL man Paul Gallen in December 2021.
Bench: Blake Wallace
Wallace joined Leigh after Toronto Wolfpack folded, but he played just three games before picking up a concussion that would force him into an early retirement. He took charge of Dapto Canaries as a head coach in 2022.
Bench: Tony Gigot
Gigot has been seen at a number of clubs since his brief stint with the Wolfpack. He joined Wakefield Trinity in July 2020, but made the move to Avignon the following January. A switch to Toulouse Olympique came about in May 2021 and he captained the side during their first season in Super League. However, he brought his playing days to an end with Albi Tigers, where he is now the head coach.
