British professional boxer Anthony Joshua suffered minor injuries in a car crash in Nigeria on Monday that left two other passengers dead, according to authorities.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, local officials said. It comes just days after Joshua’s highly publicized heavyweight victory over YouTube star Jake Paul in Miami on Dec. 19.

The Ogun State Police Command wrote in a statement that Joshua was seated in the rear of a Lexus SUV at the time of the crash and received medical attention for minor injuries. Two other passengers died at the scene. The status of the driver is unclear.

The Federal Road Safety Corps also said in a statement that the Lexus jeep was speeding “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit” when it crashed into a stationary truck.

In a separate X post, Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, shared a photo of the crash and noted that ambulances had been called to the scene. In the image, Joshua could be seen standing at the crash site.

Eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo told local outlet The Punch that the passenger seated next to the driver and the person who was sitting beside Joshua both died at the scene.

The Punch also shared an image of Joshua sitting in the damaged vehicle as well as a video of the former two-time heavyweight champion emerging from the SUV at the crash site.

BBC reported that one of Joshua’s relatives said the boxer was traveling from Lagos to his family’s home at the time of the accident.

On Monday morning, Jake Paul shared his thoughts about the tragedy in an X post.

“Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident,” he wrote.

Following the crash, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, told the Daily Mail, “We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images.”

Hearn added, “We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”

HuffPost has reached out to Hearn for comment, as well as the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Ogun State Police Command for more details about the crash.

Officials say the accident is under investigation.
