However, Ruben Amorim watched the Premier League club end 2025 on a sour note after United’s poor result against Wolves at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.
The Red Devils were tipped as the favourites against Premier League strugglers Wolves, with Rob Edwards’ men not winning a league match so far this season.
However, Wolves stunned United by snatching a first-half equaliser at Old Trafford and Rob Edwards’ side walked away with a Premier League point earlier this week.

Joshua Zirkzee had fired the Red Devils into the lead over Wolves in their final Premier League match of 2025, but the club were unable to hold on to their lead.
Ladislav Krejci rose at the back post on the cusp of half-time and the 26-year-old Wolves defender headed home the equaliser to cancel out Joshua Zirkzee’s effort.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker suggested the 1-1 scoreline at Old Trafford was the sign of a “backward step” for United under Ruben Amorim.
“I think for United, that’s a really poor result, isn’t it?” Lineker asked.
He added: “I mean, with all due respect to me, a team that’s only got two points all season comes to your own place. They want to finish the year really well.
“Having had a victory, it was probably a really, you know, a backward step.”
Alan Shearer echoes one key sentiment that Gary Lineker shared about Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim after the Wolves match
Alan Shearer was deeply critical about the Red Devils’ performance against Wolves and played down United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League last month.
“Yeah, I think so,” he said in response to Lineker.
“I mean, I’ve never got carried away with Man United. You know, I don’t think they’re a good team anyway.
“I think they’ve got a long way to go. I mean, they beat Newcastle. It was back to the wall, wasn’t it?
“Newcastle, they just couldn’t score. It was viewed as a big performance in terms of sticking together. They changed the system.”

Shearer shared the same sentiments as Lineker over United’s result against Wolves, with the Premier League legend also agreeing that it was a key setback for Amorim.
“But then for him to sort of go back to it against Wolves, who were bottom of the table, have got a dreadful, embarrassing record this season,” he continued.
“And then to draw the game, yeah, it’s a setback. There’s no doubt.”
United are sixth in the Premier League table and the Red Devils will travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Sunday afternoon for their first match of 2026.
