Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is leading the race to become Manchester United‘s caretaker manager and make a comeback to Old Trafford. But Sir Jim Ratcliffe is drawing up a list of blockbuster names for the permanent position. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Carrick were also considered for the interim role following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

However, Van Nistelrooy has been ruled out, and while Carrick trails behind Solskjaer, he may still be offered a position alongside him. Solskjaer had discussions with club executives on Tuesday, reportedly impressing CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. The Norwegian will return home from his Cheshire residence to attend a close friend’s funeral. Yet, it’s believed that his appointment could be confirmed before next week begins.

Currently, Darren Fletcher is holding the fort as interim boss and will lead United in their match against Burnley tonight. Despite this, it’s understood that United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe is keen to explore other options for a permanent successor to Amorim, and is likely to wait until the summer.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who was previously approached before Amorim’s appointment in November 2024, remains a top contender. Other names in the mix include Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti and USA boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Solskjaer, a former United striker, first took over the reins temporarily in December 2018 after Jose Mourinho’s departure. He secured the job permanently and managed United for nearly three years.

The 52-year-old, whose stint as Besiktas manager lasted less than six months, is eager to make an emotional return to Old Trafford for a second time.

However, his potential comeback has ignited a wave of criticism on social media, with fans accusing the club of dwelling on past glories and lacking forward-thinking vision.
