Nigel Clough’s side initially wanted to take the Bolton striker on loan but have edged ahead of the likes of Reading and Leyton Orient by offering up a permanent deal for the Nigerian striker on similar terms to the ones he currently earns at the Toughsheet.
Wanderers will get a nominal fee for the 27-year-old, who has not featured for them since February because of a knee injury. And crucially, it will free up another space in the squad for an ‘overage’ signing to be made in January.
Will Forrester departed for Leyton Orient on Thursday and further departures are expected before the end of the month, with Wanderers hoping to make three new signings to sharpen their squad for the promotion run-in.
Adeboyejo was signed for £500,000 from Burton Albion in January 2023 after the most prolific goalscoring spell of his career at the Pirelli Stadium, which had seen him score 13 times by the turn of the year.
He had been converted from a right-sided attacker to a number nine with the Brewers and Ian Evatt felt he would be the perfect foil for then top-scorer Dion Charles.
Though he finished the campaign with 16 goals for both clubs, his slow start at Bolton set him back with the supporters and though he also reached double figures again in 2023/24, including a hat-trick against Fleetwood Town, he struggled with popularity on the terraces.
Wanderers turned down a £1million bid for Adeboyejo from Turkish side Göztepe before the summer deadline the following season and though he scored against his former club Leyton Orient on the opening day of the season, he managed just four over the course of the campaign.
Steven Schumacher did start him in the majority of his opening games in charge but a torn ACL sustained in a game at home to Orient left him out of action until November, by which time the team had taken on a significant squad change.
He will leave the club with a record of 99 appearances in all competitions and 17 goals.
