A dad who travelled from Ireland to Liverpool for a lads’ weekend away found himself unconscious in the middle of the street after stumbling in the dark. David Ryan was on a night out with friends in Liverpool city centre when he lost his balance and fell on Mathew Street, in the heart of the famous Cavern Quarter, at around 4am on Sunday, July 7.

The dad-of-one hit his head on the pavement and was knocked unconscious, resulting in emergency services being called to the scene.

He said: “I tripped and fell and hit the back of my head fairly bad. This lovely girl stopped and held my hand until help arrived. But I never got a chance to thank the girl personally. But she was a native of Liverpool.

“Liverpool and the Irish people have a great relationship and it goes to show the relationship is maintained with the generosity and kindness of people.

“Something like this I never thought would happen, but it did happen and it’s lovely to see there’s kind, good-hearted people still out there.”

David, 43, from Dublin, was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital, and was discharged later that day at 4.30pm. Luckily, he did not sustain serious injuries.

He reached out to the ECHO in the hopes of finding the woman who stayed by his side for 45 minutes as they waited for emergency services to arrive.

He said: “Back in the 60s you would have got kindness like this, but in the world we live in now kindness like that is very few and far between.

“I’d also like thank the police of Merseyside who got me to hospital because we couldn’t get an ambulance, and I’d also like to thank the hospital for their kindness. But this girl in particular I want to thank personally.

“Even if we can’t find the woman, I’d like to just say that whoever it was, I cannot thank them enough from the bottom of my heart. Their kindness will never be forgotten. Not everyone would help someone like that but she stayed with me about 45 minutes.

“My friends were with me too, but you know what lads are like, saying he’ll get up soon. But she actually sat with me and held my hand. Out of probably thousands of people in the street she stopped and waited for the help to arrive.”
