A pub in Cornwall has received another zero hygiene rating after “rat activity”, bird poo and rancid food were found.

The King’s Head in Ruan Lanihorne near Truro was handed the rating on October 29 – two years after receiving a similar zero rating for some of the same exact reasons.

The latest report noted that “evidence of rat activity was found in the food store” adding that a “similar issue was found previously on September 22, 2023”.

It also said there were “out of date foods in fridges and freezer” and a “large quantity of food appeared to be unfit for consumption”.

“Sauce containers had mould growth on and in them, some food containers in the freezer containing meat had flies in them. Cabbages had blackened,” the report reads.

It also said: “There was putrid squid defrosting in the sink in the kitchen. This appears to have been frozen once it was already not fit for consumption.”

The report added there was “a box in (the) cellar with a considerable amount of bird faeces over it”, something the investigator said “has no place” in a food or drink storage room.

Follow-up inspections one and two weeks later showed almost all of the issues were fixed, noting after the second follow up that “no further visit will be necessary but high standards of compliance must now be permanently maintained”.

It comes two years after the pub was forced to temporarily close in 2023 – when a food hygiene inspection found it had “no food safety management in place”.

Pests, rotting meat and mould were among the findings in the 2023 inspection – and the pub was told to fix its standards as a matter of urgency.

The previous report showed it rectified almost all of the issues in a matter of days – but two years on, the fresh rating highlighted similar issues.

It stated improvement was necessary when it came to hygienic food handling, which consists of factors like preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

It also found “major improvement” was needed with regards to cleanliness, condition of facilities and the building as well as management of food safety.

The King’s Head has been approached for comment.
