Ruben Amorim could be in line for a swift return to the dugout after being given his marching orders at Manchester United following a 14-month spell.

It’s over for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, but the 40-year-old coach will look to bounce back at another club in the future.

Amorim did not achieve the desired results required to become successful at Old Trafford. In his first season, United finished 15th in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League football after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

United’s form over the past 14 months could tarnish Amorim’s reputation in the game, but many will remember how his Sporting CP won two league titles in Portugal before he moved to the Premier League. It’s worth noting that his preferred tactical system received far less scrutiny in Portugal.

Meanwhile, at M16 ORA, United hired Michael Carrick as head coach until the end of the season. The 44-year-old has been tasked with steadying the ship and securing Champions League qualification.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho is enduring a challenging season with Benfica.

The club is likely to end the campaign without a trophy after getting knocked out of the Portuguese Cup by FC Porto and the League Cup by SC Braga.

Benfica are currently third in the league standings, 10 points adrift of Porto in the top spot.

According to Rudy Galetti, Mourinho could make a sensational return to Real Madrid next season, with Amorim at the top of Benfica’s shortlist as a replacement.

Galetti took to X with an update, writing: “Among the names being considered by Real Madrid for next season there is also Jose Mourinho.

“Benfica would not block a possible exit, and in that case, Ruben Amorim is at the top of their shortlist as a replacement.

“Situation to monitor with attention.”

Is Gary Neville wrong to be ruling Michael Carrick out of the running for the permanent job already?

Or do you think this is a moment Neville is speaking sense?

A return to the Portuguese league would suit Amorim, but he may want to challenge himself again, even if his time in the Premier League didn’t go to plan.

Furthermore, it’s not the first time Amorim has been linked with Benfica.

Real Madrid sacked Xabi Alonso during the week and replaced him with Alvaro Arbeloa. The latter’s lack of experience makes him an unlikely answer for the long-term future of the Spanish giants.

Ruben Amorim honours at Benfica

Amorim spent most of his playing career at Benfica, meaning he could return to a club he knows better than most.

He went on to win three Primeira Liga titles as a player, as well as the Taça da Liga five times.

The former United head coach also earned 14 caps for Portugal.

Amorim left Benfica in 2017 following nine years at the club.
