Sunderland move on to 33 points as they’re back to winning ways, while Palace are now without a win in 10 games in all competitions and are on 28 points in the league.
Palace out of energy and direction
Each season there is always one team which gets sucked into the relegation scrap unexpectedly. It could be Palace. With West Ham winning on Saturday, the gap to the bottom three for Palace is 11 points. That sounds like a lot but the way they’re playing, the players they have available and the rudderless direction of the club suggests things could unravel very quickly. Oliver Glasner is leaving this summer. Captain Marc Guehi is off to Man City soon. Other key players could be on the move in the coming weeks or this summer. Palace worked so hard to build a tight-knit squad but as has happened in previous years when overachieving teams have had to juggle European action (see: Swansea City and Burnley to name a few) they have run out of steam. Things can get away from you quickly. Add in the turmoil of not knowing who the manager will be in the summer, losing a key leader, going 10 games without a win and being knocked out of the FA Cup by sixth-tier Macclesfield FC, and all is not well at Palace. It’s still too early for talk of a relegation scrap but with European games to juggle amid a run of Premier League games against teams towards the bottom of the table in the next few weeks, by late February Palace could be in even bigger trouble. They have totally run out of steam.
What’s next?
Sunderland head to West Ham on Saturday, January 24, while Palace host Chelsea on Sunday, January 25.

It’s a wonderful finish from Brian Brobbey to give the Black Cats the 2-1 advantage over Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light.
Henderson denies Hume
A great start to the second half from Sunderland and a cross from the left meets Trai Hume. His looping header is decent but Dean Henderson saves.
Mateta fires home superbly, but he’s offside
Oh what a goal that is. Mateta controls so well over the top and fires home a beauty, but he was just offside when the initial ball came in. My word, that is frustrating for him. He did everything else so well.
Le Fee gets Sunderland level right away!
Brilliant play down the right from Mukiele and his cross perfectly picks out Enzo Le Fee who finishes with a lovely low effort.
Le Fee brings Sunderland level with Crystal Palace
Just three minutes after Crystal Palace opened the scoring, Sunderland equalize thanks to Enzo Le Fee’s well-taken effort at the Stadium of Light.
Pino with a lovely lobbed finish!
From a corner the ball drops to Yeremy Pino at the back post and somehow he dinks a lovely lobbed finish into the far top corner. What a finish! Palace lead.

Guehi will not play as he closes in on his move to Man City. Daniel Munoz could return from injury, while Jefferson Lerma is fit and available. It will be intriguing to see how Palace’s players respond to a tumultuous week on and off the pitch.
Sunderland vs Crystal Palace preview
Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland have plenty of key players back as many have returned from AFCON duty to boost their options. They lost at Brentford last time out in the Premier League and are without a win in their last five league matches (drawing four of those), but did win at Everton in the FA Cup last weekend.
Palace, the reigning FA Cup champs, lost in the cup at sixth-tier Macclesfield FC last weekend and that kickstarted a terrible week for the south London club. First, captain Marc Guehi is on the verge of a move to Manchester City as his contract was up this summer and he’s finally moving on. Then manager Oliver Glasner confirmed he is leaving as boss when his contract expires this summer. Plus, reports have emerged that star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta could also leave in the final days of the January window.
Sunderland vs Crystal Palace prediction
This feels like Sunderland will make the most of the chaos around Palace and get a big win. Sunderland 2-0 Crystal Palace.
