George McGuigan is back in black! The powerhouse hooker has sealed a one-year deal with Newcastle Falcons, returning to his boyhood club after stints at Gloucester and Ospreys.
The 32-year-old fan favourite, who racked up 48 tries in 165 appearances across two spells at Kingston Park, is set to add firepower and leadership to a Falcons squad on the rise.
Having first emerged from the club’s academy ranks, McGuigan knows exactly what it means to wear the jersey. Now, after a rollercoaster year away, he’s relishing the chance to finish what he started.
“It’s a very exciting time for the club and I’m looking forward to being part of this new journey,” McGuigan said.
“It’s been a tough year, so getting back to the club I call home means a lot. I’ve got plenty left in the tank, and I want to show that on the pitch.”
McGuigan left for Gloucester in late 2022 before joining the Ospreys to close out last season, but the pull of home has proved too strong.
Newcastle boss Steve Diamond couldn’t hide his excitement about the signing.
“George is a real statement signing,” Diamond said.
“He’s a physical presence, a leader, and his set-piece work is spot-on. As an opposition coach, he always gave me headaches – now I’m glad he’s on my side.”
“He brings quality and experience to our pack, and he knows this club inside out. It’s a big plus as we build something here.”
McGuigan’s return marks a major step forward for the Falcons – and the Kingston Park faithful will be buzzing to see one of their own back where he belongs.
