Police have made an arrest after Trearddur Bay FC confirmed they have suspended player Tom Taylor following public outcry for a lifetime ban due to a ‘disgusting’ elbow incident during their match against CPD Porthmadog on Saturday. North Wales Police confirmed a 35-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of assault after the shocking event sparked widespread outrage online.

A video appearing to show Taylor elbowing opponent ahead of a penalty went viral over the weekend, leading to football fans demanding a lifetime ban for the player responsible for the violent act.

The footage, shared on X on Saturday evening, shows the Trearddur Bay player flooring the unsuspecting Porthmadog player with an elbow.

In a statement, Trearddur Bay FC said: “Trearddur Bay FC wish to confirm that it has suspended Tom Taylor from immediate effect following an incident between tbfc and Porthmadog fc yesterday.

“As the matter is subject to a police investigation, the club will not be making any further comment at this stage save that the club in no way condones the use of unlawful behaviour by its staff or players.”

North Wales Police said on Sunday: “North Wales Police are aware of a video circulating online relating to an incident that occurred at a football match between Treaddur Bay FC and Porthmadog FC on Saturday (17 January).

“Officers have been making enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. As part of this investigation a 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in police custody at this time.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we would ask members of the public not to speculate whilst the investigation continues. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact police through 101 quoting 26000046180.”

The incident led to a massive wave of anger on social media, with calls for the player’s ban and some urging the Welsh FA to intervene.

One social media user expressed their disgust, saying: “ABSOLUTELY DISTGUSTING FROM TREADDUR BAY SHOULD GET BANNED FOR LIFE DISGRACE! ! @CPDPorthmadogFC.”

Another viewer concurred, and said: “He has just played his last game of football,” whilst a third said: “Cowardly act, hope the [other player] is ok.”

A fourth supporter said: “That’s beyond unacceptable. Football has no place for that kind of behaviour.”

The Football Association of Wales has subsequently issued a statement, which said: “Tier three matches fall under the jurisdiction of the FAW. The FAW is aware of the incident and will be reviewing it.”

Porthmadog, who compete in the Lock Stock Ardal North West League at the third tier of Welsh football, claimed a 3-2 victory over Trearddur Bay on Saturday.

The visitors took an early lead through Tom Hilditch’s 12th-minute goal, though Gruff Ellis levelled matters on 27 minutes.

The home side then moved ahead thanks to Jonny Bravo’s strike with just six minutes remaining, before Gruff John made it 3-1 shortly after.

Although Hilditch netted his second during stoppage time, it wasn’t enough, as Porthmadog claimed all three points.

After the final whistle, the club wrote on X: “Port forced to keep pushing towards the end of the extended injury time but deserving the victory over the 90.”
