Kung Fu Hustle star Bruce Leung has died aged 77.

The actor, also known as Leung Choi-sang and Leung Siu-lung, passed away January 14 surrounded by his family, according to reports.

Leung was branded one of the Four Dragons of Chinese cinema alongside Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Ti Lung because of their influence in Chinese-language martial arts cinema.

He learned martial arts from his father at a young age and over the course of his career appeared in dozens of kung fu films.

After making a name for himself in the 70s and 80s, Leung swapped acting to go into business.

He then made a hugely popular comeback as the villain Beast in Stephen Chow’s 2004 box office hit Kung Fu Hustle.

Leung’s death was confirmed by a close friend, who claimed the married father-of-three died from heart failure.

Jackie Chan, who worked with Leung on 1978’s Magnificent Bodyguards, led the outpouring of tributes.

‘He devoted his life’s learning to film and television, becoming an outstanding action director.

‘He created so many classic roles, loved by audiences and admired by colleagues.’

Concluding his tribute, Chan added: ‘Brother Leung, it’s snowing in Beijing. The sky is grey. I miss you.’

Actor Stephen Chow said: ‘Forever remembering Mr. Leung Siu-lung.’

A message also appeared on Leung’s Douyin account following news of his death.

According to reports, it read: ‘I’ve gone to a faraway place to make a film.

‘Please forgive me for leaving without saying goodbye.
