Hull KR coach Willie Peters says his side got what they needed out of their pre-season defeat to Wakefield Trinity, with the treble winners coming through unscathed.

A youthful Rovers team boasting no more than a handful of contenders to start the season were beaten 34-6 by a more experienced Wakefield side.

Despite handing the likes of new signings Karl Lawton and Jordan Dezaria a first run out in KR colours, Peters used the match to take a look at his fringe players and academy squad, rather than use the game to get his senior stars ready for the start of the season.

“The main thing was to blood some young guys and see how they handle it, and I thought they handled it reasonably well,” explained Peters.

“I don’t think the half-time score reflected how we were tracking. I thought they did okay.”

Rovers were behind 22-0 at the break as their right edge got caught out by Wakefield’s last-play execution, but otherwise stood up well to the challenge posed by a Trinity team that won’t look much different when Super League begins.

Also important for Rovers was the fact the squad came through unscathed on the injury front, with Peters confirming for the first time after the game the extent of the injury to Tom Amone.

“Tom Amone broke his hand while we were in Tenerife but he will be okay for the World Club Challenge, but he’s unlikely to be ready for round one,” said Peters.

“Other than that everyone is tracking okay. Sam Luckley is on his way back and we want to get a little bit of running into him, but everyone else is okay and we look like we’ve come through the Wakefield game okay.”
