Ross Barkley has cleared up confusion around his Aston Villa contract – and delivered an update on his availability after injury.

The midfielder signed for Villa from Luton Town in the summer of 2024, with some reports at the time saying he had agreed a three year deal, others suggesting it was two plus an option.

Either way the claim by a Villa fan account on Twitter that he was out of contract in the summer brought a response from the man himself.

Barkley simply replied ‘That’s not true’.

The former Everton and Chelsea man has had a luckless time since signing from the Hatters. His first season saw him make just three Premier League starts – and this term he has made just seven appearances off the bench.

Indeed he has not played at all since the win over Wolves at the end of November, albeit he says he is on the brink of a return from a knee injury.

Replying to another fan on the same thread he revealed he is ‘Back training with the team Friday’. Villa face Brentford at home on Sunday.

His return could not be better timed with Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Youri Tielemans out injured.
