A 95 year-old woman was tied up and threatened in a ‘vile’ attempted robbery in Salford. Police were called to an address on Belcroft Drive in Little Hulton in Salford at around 11am this morning (Tuesday, January 27).

“It is believed that a man entered the property after offering to clean the woman’s windows, before tying her hands together” Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

He then demanded the woman hand over cash and her purse. However, the would-be-robber was disturbed when one of the women’s friends arrived at the house and confronted him, GMP said. He fled the scene and the victim was unharmed, the force added.

No one has yet been arrested but detectives say ‘extensive enquiries’ are underway to identify and find the culprit. They are asking for anyone who has any information or CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage that may help them, to come forward.

The suspect was a white male and believed to be in his late 60s or early 70s, GMP said. “He had short mousy brown hair which was combed back, no facial hair, glasses, and appeared well-kempt. He was wearing a dark raincoat jacket, jeans and dark-coloured shoes” they added.

Patrols are being stepped up in the area as a response. Detective Inspector Paul Davies, from GMP’s Salford district, said: “This was a vile incident in which a woman was tied up and threatened in an address, and we are determined to locate the man responsible.

“Thankfully, this was not a more serious situation and we commend the brave actions of the lady’s friend who confronted the man and called officers.

“As we progress this investigation, we are appealing for anyone with any information to please come forward. It could be something big or small– it all assists in our work.”
