The iconic Col de la Madeleine makes its first ever appearance at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift on Saturday and the women’s peloton is expecting the Alpine ascent to turn the race on its head.
Ever since the race route was released last October, riders have been focused on stage 8 as the decisive point in the race. “Tomorrow is D-Day,” said race leader Kim Le Court-Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal).
After a series of flat or only mildly hilly days to start the race, the yellow jersey hopefuls have featured more prominently over the last two stages of the Tour de France Femmes, but Saturday’s stage 8 promises to ratchet up the drama much higher. For one thing, it’s the first and only summit finish of the race, and that alone will make it a key day for GC riders. For another, after a week of racing, just 1:35 separates the entire top 10 overall. More than that, though, it’s the Col de la Madeleine.
It’s not a Tour icon for nothing.
