An 80-year-old man has been arrested after a 95-year-old woman was tied up and threatened during an attempted robbery in Salford after being asked about bin collection day, police said.
It is understood an assailant entered the woman’s property in Little Hulton in Salford on Tuesday, tied her hands together, and asked for cash and her purse.
He was disturbed when another woman who knew the victim arrived at the property and confronted the robber, who fled the scene.
Greater Manchester police (GMP) said officers attended an address on Manchester Road, Worsley, on Wednesday and arrested a suspect on suspicion of attempted robbery and false imprisonment.
He remains in custody for questioning, the force said.
No injuries were reported and officers are supporting the victim.
GMP had previously said that a man offered to clean the victim’s windows, but detectives now believe he asked about bin collection day.
Det insp Paul Davies, from GMP’s Salford district, said: “When this report came in to us yesterday, we were shocked by the very nature of it, and immediately utilised all resources available as part of our investigation.
“I am glad that we now have someone arrested in connection with this incident and inquiries remain ongoing.
“I would ask the community to not speculate in order to allow the criminal justice process to run its proper course.
“I want to thank everyone who has shared our appeals and got in touch with us – your assistance is truly appreciated and helps us provide the best service possible.”
