Ian Wright compelled Paul Scholes to clarify his assertion that Arsenal could become the worst Premier League champions ever should they claim the title this campaign.
Scholes explained he meant they would be the ‘most boring’ after Wright highlighted that United secured the league in the 1996/97 season with the lowest-ever Premier League points tally of 75. The clarification satisfied Wright, who declared he would accept being dull if they still captured a first league crown in nearly 22 years.
Nevertheless, he refused to accept they would rank as the worst champions in Premier League history, as Scholes had suggested earlier in the week.
Speaking on The Good, the Bad and the Football, he stated: “If Arsenal win the league, this could be the worst team to win the league.

“If you’re thinking of picking a team of the season and picking the front four, nobody from the Arsenal team gets in that. Look at previous champions – Liverpool’s forwards, brilliant.”
Mohamed Salah featured in the PFA Team of the Season last year, whilst Sadio Mane earned selection when they first claimed the Premier League in 2020.
Scholes continued: “Possibly the only one is [Bukayo] Saka, and I don’t think he’s been brilliant. He’s not scored many goals this year or assists.”

Saka has netted four goals and registered three assists in the Premier League this season.
Gary Neville referenced what Scholes said on episode 114 of Stick to Football. He said: “I’m not even gonna mention his comment that they’re gonna be the worst team ever to win the title.”
Wright replied instantly by saying: “Man United team that won with 7- if we win it, we win it with more than 77 [it was 75] points, like you lot won it. Like, ‘f***s sake Scholesy! I said: ‘Is that my mate here?’ Reading this, ‘it’s my mate!'”.
Neville responded: “He’s just shooting from the hip, he’s just [gunshot sounds].”
Scholes then clarified: “I meant to say the most boring team, not the worst team, sorry. You will be boring, it doesn’t matter how you do it, does it? Doesn’t matter how you do it.”
Wright concurred, adding: “I’d take boring and win. I’m very excited because I believe, yes, we do have to win it, we do have to win it, and I’m confident enough that we will do it, I’m confident.”
Arsenal currently lead the Premier League by four points, ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa. United sit 12 points away from the Gunners.
