Now in his second spell as assistant, after Wilfried Nancy’s 33-day reign came to an end, Maloney opened up on his long-term future at the club. “No, not for me,” he said, regarding the managerial position. “I’ll definitely be assisting Martin. In terms of next year, that loan role is still there, but I think we’ll figure all that out in the summer.

“I think for the next three months, it’s just give everything to try and win a league, go as far as we can in Europe, and then the club will look for someone else. I know Martin’s already said that he doesn’t see himself here. We’ll see at the end of the season.

“I definitely promised the people at the club that I’d do this season and next season in the technical role. I’ve actually loved being back at the club, I really have. I promised them this season and next, but I actually hope it’s longer.

“I’ve really enjoyed being here in whatever role they see me in.”

Celtic next take on Falkirk on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership, before turning their attention to the closure of the transfer window on Monday evening.

The club will be hoping to add further reinforcements to the squad, following the additions of Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara from Bournemouth and Borussia Monchengladbach, respectively.
