Despite having HBO Max’s third most-watched debut in the platform’s history, “IT: Welcome to Derry” has not yet received a greenlight for the second season.

Speaking with Deadline, HBO CEO Casey Bloys provided some clarification about the lack of renewal.

“Let me say, not in limbo at all. Hardly. It was a huge success for us,” he said of the series, which was developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs.

Bloys continues, “Andy and Barbara are hard at work trying to come up with an idea for a story they’d want to tell for another season. I would happily do it.”

He adds, “One of the challenges is, there’s not a book that you’re basing it on, so it’s invention. They want to make sure that they have a story they’re excited to tell. So it’s not limbo other than they need to land on something they’re excited by creatively. We’ll be there.”

Serving as a prequel to Muschietti’s IT films based on Stephen King‘s classic novel, the first season of “IT: Welcome to Derry” went back to 1962 to explore the origins of the evil, shape-shifting entity known as Pennywise.

The second season is expected to take place in 1935, with a proposed third season to be set in 1908.

Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as Pennywise. Jovan Adepo (“The Stand”), Taylour Paige (The Toxic Avenger), Chris Chalk (“Gotham”), James Remar (“Dexter”), Stephen Rider (“Daredevil”), Madeleine Stowe (12 Monkeys), and Rudy Mancuso (The Flash) lead the ensemble.

Ranked as one of Bloody Disgusting’s 10 Best Horror Television Series of 2025, “IT: Welcome to Derry” Season 1 is now streaming on HBO Max and hits physical media on May 5.
