Despite Newcastle’s attacking injury issues for most of the first half of the season, Osula has barely featured this term, starting just two matches in all competitions.

The 22-year-old has suffered injury problems of his own, with an ankle problem sidelining him for the best part of two months.

He is back in full training now, but was an unused substitute in both last weekend’s league defeat to Aston Villa and the midweek Champions League draw with Paris St Germain.

Provided Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade stay fit, his prospects of playing regular first-team football with Newcastle in the remainder of the season look slim.

That has persuaded a number of clubs to make contact with the Magpies over a potential move for Osula ahead of Monday’s 7pm deadline. Most of the offers are understood to have been loan suggestions, although there has also been interest in potential permanent deals.

Eintracht Frankfurt thought they had signed Osula on deadline-day in the summer, but their proposed deal broke down at the final minute.

Frankfurt officials have been back in touch with the Newcastle hierarchy this month, although at this stage, the Bundesliga side have not tabled another formal offer for Osula, who is contracted to the Magpies to the summer of 2029.

Ipswich are one of a number of Championship clubs who have an interest in Osula, with Kieran McKenna keen to bolster his attack in the final few days of the window as he looks to guide his side to automatic promotion.

Ipswich have made a number of attempts to sign Leeds striker Joel Piroe, but have been unable to strike a deal with the hierarchy at Elland Road. It is looking increasingly likely that Piroe will remain at Leeds, so Ipswich have begun looking elsewhere and are reportedly ready to firm up their interest in Osula.

Marseille have also been heavily linked with a move for the Danish youngster, with the French media suggesting the Ligue 1 club are proposing an initial loan with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.

Marseille allowed Neal Maupay to join Sevilla on loan earlier this month, and while the former Brighton, Brentford and Everton striker was not a regular performer at the Stade Velodrome in the first half of the season, his departure has nevertheless left Marseille short of attacking options.

Roberto de Zerbi is pushing for the recruitment of another forward this month, with Osula one of a small number of ‘development’ signings the club are understood to be considering.

With Eddie Howe effectively admitting yesterday that Newcastle will not be making any signings of their own this month, the Magpies will have to decide whether to risk allowing Osula to leave without a replacement.

There is, however, an acknowledgement that the youngster’s career could stagnate if he remains on Tyneside but hardly plays any first-team football in the next four months.
