Pat Cash has quipped that Emma Raducanu has cycled through more coaches than Premier League side Chelsea after the British No. 1 revealed her parting of ways with Francisco Roig. Raducanu is on the lookout for the tenth coach of her professional career following their mutual decision to cease their working relationship.

She will allegedly have Alexis Canter in her coaching corner at the Transylvania Open, the WTA 250 event in Romania. Raducanu confirmed her separation from Roig mere days before the tournament, where she secured her maiden WTA Tour victories in 2021, is set to commence.

Cash responded to her latest coaching change whilst commentating on the Australian Open men’s singles semi-finals for BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra. The 1987 Wimbledon champion remarked during Tennis Breakfast: “The question would be: Is she giving it a fair shot with somebody? They seem to be coming and going so quickly. She’s had more coaches than Chelsea have had managers.”

Chelsea are currently on their fifth permanent manager since Raducanu claimed the US Open in 2021, with their most recent appointment occurring after Enzo Maresca left the club on New Year’s Day with Liam Rosenior arriving less than a week later.

The British No.1, meanwhile, is now seeking her 10th coach since the same year. Raducanu worked with Nigel Sears when progressing to the fourth round of Wimbledon that summer. Nevertheless, it was Andrew Richardson in her coaching team during the US Open, a partnership that lasted merely two months and concluded weeks following her triumph across the Atlantic.

She has also had brief stints with Dmitry Tursunov, Mark Petchey, Nick Cavaday, Sebastian Sachs, Torben Beltz and Vladimir Platenik. Cavaday, who mentored her during her formative years, holds the record as her longest-serving coach, with his tenure concluding due to health concerns last year.

Raducanu has, however, parted ways with Roig on good terms. She said of Roig: “Thank you for our time together. You have been more than a coach to me, and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on and off the court.

“While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know I am very grateful for all you have taught me and fond of our time shared.”

Cash is baffled about her next move. He said: “I don’t really know; it’s a mystery to me. Sometimes there’s too much information. You’ve got to try and work it out yourself, or you try and find someone who’s aligned with you, and keep trying. It’s hard to know. I know she works hard; she didn’t have the ideal preparation coming into the Australian season.”

The Australian also said: “The best players in the world have a steady coaching system, and they tweak it a little bit from time to time.

“[Roger] Federer had it a long time, added a couple of people; [Rafael] Nadal, [Novak] Djokovic had that stint, and then he added Goran [Ivanisevic] in for a bunch of years.

“Tweak it a little bit here and there; you need some more information to get better and better, but it’s very hard to get better when you don’t give it a full shot. I’m not saying that was the case, I just know that’s the reality of it.”
