The Marchwood surgery closed four months ago, despite complaints that patients would have to travel several miles to a practice at Dibden Purlieu.

Now, New Forest District Council has received an application to convert the Grade II-listed former farmhouse into five flats.

Several Marchwood residents have written to the council to voice their anger and display at the proposal.

Ian Millen, of Admiralty Way, says: “This building has been a big part of the community for decades. It should be offered to a new GP so we can continue to receive our care here in Marchwood instead of having to travel all the way to Beaulieu Road.”

Mr Millen says the lack of direct public transport to the other surgery “creates a real problem for elderly and those who are unable to drive”.

He also cites plans to build hundreds of new homes in Marchwood and says the building should continue to be used as a surgery.

“I urge the council to resist this application and ask the General Medical Council to to allocate the property to one or more of the newly-qualified GPs who find themselves without work.

“Failure to continue having our own GP practice in Marchwood is a betrayal to all the residents of our fine village and its history.”

Caroline Lloyd, of St John’s Court, adds: “Marchwood residents have lost a vital facility. I’m now having to travel on two buses to see a doctor, plus the fact that it is near impossible to actually get an appointment.”

The Marchwood and Dibden Purlieu buildings are owned by Forestside Medical Practice.

A design and access statement that accompanies the planning application says Forestside has redistributed healthcare services to more appropriate sites with modern facilities.”

The Marchwood building is a former farm that was converted into a GP surgery in the mid-1980s.

Asked about the flats scheme, ward councillor Richard Young told the Daily Echo: “I will be carefully studying the detail and only then making considered comments upon the potential merits and demerits of what is proposed.

“I strongly encourage everyone else in the community to do likewise and to make their views known.”
