Ulster have strengthen their half-back options for next season with the signing of Connacht scrum-half Matthew Devine on a one-year deal.

The 23-year-old will make the switch from Galway to Belfast this summer, committing to the province until at least 2027 as Ulster continue their squad reshaping under Richie Murphy.

Devine, a Ballinasloe native, is a graduate of Connacht’s academy system and has already made his mark at senior level, scoring three tries this season.

His arrival will see him reunited him with Murphy, who coached Devine during Ireland’s memorable U20 Grand Slam campaign in 2022, while Ulster backs coach Mark Sexton also knows the scrum-half well from his time at Connacht.

“I’m delighted to sign with Ulster Rugby and can’t wait to make the move up north,” Devine said.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity to join a team who are making great strides forward and playing some of the most exciting rugby in the URC.

“Having worked with the coaching staff before, I feel their style really suits my game and I’m excited to meet my new teammates and the Ulster supporters.”

Ulster general manager Rory Best believes the province has secured one of the brightest young No 9s in the country.

“We are very pleased to reach an agreement with Matty and look forward to welcoming him into the squad,” Best said.

“We feel we have secured one of the most talented young scrum-halves in Ireland, who has a strong desire to kick on in his career.

“He will add strong competition to our scrum-half positions moving forward.”
