Bonding with baby elephants

Elephant kisses are just one of the many forms of non-verbal tactics elephants use to communicate and bond with others. An elephant’s trunk plays an integral role in all aspects of communication and socialization.

According to PBS, elephants use their trunks to touch, smell, and caress each other in order to help “maintain their social bonds.” Their trunks contain over 150,000 muscles and are considered one of the most sensitive organs in a mammal, per Wildlife SOS.

In the wild, elephants use their trunks to communicate with other elephants as they pass by, or to show affection. PBS also notes that elephants use seismic vibrations to communicate, and may even use their trunks to detect them by laying them on the ground.

So, kisses from an elephant are not just a sign of affection for these majestic animals; they also help them form connections and understand the world around them.
