John Constable, born 250 years ago, is at the heart of Constable: A Cast of Characters, a new exhibition opening in March 2026 at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich.

The exhibition, part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of Constable’s birth, will explore the people and places that shaped his life and work.

Emma Roodhouse, Art Collections & Learning Curator at Colchester and Ipswich Museums, said: “Marking this anniversary year, the exhibition opens up the wider world around Constable, his family, friends and supporters, revealing the social networks that shaped his artistic development, and connecting them with the contemporary through the work of Sasha Constable.

“We can’t wait for visitors to discover unexpected moments and gain a richer, more expansive understanding of Constable’s story and legacy.”

More than 100 artworks and objects will be on display, including portraits, sketches and landscapes, alongside personal items such as his wife’s wedding ring, his Royal Academy diploma and his paint box.

Constable: A Cast of Characters runs from March 28 to June 14, 2026.
