Avid tennis fan Souness crossed paths with women’s world number one tennis star Aryna Sabalenka and posted a picture of them together on Instagram.

The pair were all smiles as he joked that they could be the “new mixed doubles partnership” at Wimbledon this year.

Souness captioned the post: “A pleasure to meet the number 1 ranked women’s tennis player, Aryna Sabalenko.

“New mixed doubles partnership coming to Wimbledon this summer…?”

Fans of the two sporting heroes were quick to flock to the comments, one said: “What a pairing!!!”

Another joked: “Great pic sir, I’m sure she will let you be ball boy.”

While a third added: “What an absolute winner!! Brilliant athlete, aggressive, Strong character never gives in, very talented, oh and there’s souness anaw.”

Souness was a player-manager for the Ibrox side from 1986 to 1991, leading the club to three Scottish titles and four league cups.  

Souness is widely regarded as one of the most influential midfielders in British football during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

He was at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield, and captained the club to multiple league titles and three European Cups, and won 54 caps for Scotland, many of them as captain.

Aryna Sabalenka is a Belarusian professional tennis player from Minsk and a multiple Grand Slam singles champion who has established herself as one of the dominant figures on the WTA Tour in the 2020s.

Known for her powerful serve, aggressive baseline hitting and combative on-court presence, she first rose to world No. 1 in singles in 2023 and has also held the No. 1 ranking in doubles.
