The former Celtic star, now a renowned pundit, expressed his firm belief that Askou would be a ‘great fit’ for the Parkhead club.

Celtic will be searching for a new permanent manager this summer, and Askou’s name has been widely floated as a candidate.

Sutton, who has observed Askou’s leadership of Motherwell several times this season, believes he should be the one to take over from Martin O’Neill.

He said (RecordSport): “I’m now convinced Jens Berthel Askou would be a great fit for Celtic.

“You want his Motherwell team, and you can’t help but be impressed.

“They are arguably the best side to watch in the country.

“Usually teams set up to try to stop the Glasgow clubs playing.

“Instead, it’s been the other way around this year.”

His admiration for Askou extends beyond the pitch, as Sutton also indicated his appreciation of Askou’s communication skills with media outlets.

He mentioned that Askou “ticks so many boxes” for him as an ideal candidate for the manager position at Celtic.

However, he acknowledged that the final decision rests with Dermot Desmond, who has previously made bold, big name appointments, like Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill.

He said: “There’s been a lot of talk around Martinez, and that’s been there for a number of years now.

“But I just think there is a guy on Celtic’s doorstep who is showing a lot of positive attributes to be a success at the club.

“It would be fascinating to see how he would do with more resources.”
