A local business promptly rang the British Divers Marine Life Rescue’s hotline and stayed with the pup to keep them safe until the charity’s Marine Mammal Medics arrived.

A spokesperson for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, which responds to marine mammals in distress, said: “With support from North Yorkshire Police and the local council to disperse the crowds, the pup was able to return to the beach – where they were monitored by Medics, completely oblivious to the attention they had been attracting.

“If you see a seal you’re concerned about, there are some simple steps you can take to help keep both them – and yourself – safe:

* Resist getting closer for photos or videos

* Avoid putting yourself or others at risk to observe

* Do not touch, move, chase, or pour water on the seal

* Call 999 if there is an immediate risk to people.”
