Hull FC prop Harvie Hill.

Harvie Hill says he looked at the squad Hull FC were putting together and immediately thought, “I’ll have a bit of that,” after opting to turn down a chance to stay at Wigan Warriors.

Hill swapped the Cherry and Whites for the Black and Whites when agreeing a four-year deal at the ambitious west Hull club, with his new employers tying down the prop to a lengthy contract as part of a new plan to build a squad put together around a core of players signed for the long-term.

Hull have already tied down homegrown wing stars Lewis Martin and Harvey Barron for the next four years, alongside powerhouse prop Herman Ese’Ese, while no fewer than seven players are already committed until the end of 2028.

For Whitehaven native Hill, who two years ago was featuring for Wigan in the World Club Challenge at the age of 20, it was an opportunity too good to ignore to be front and centre at a club determined to join city rivals Hull KR at the top of the Super League ladder in the coming years.

Now immersed in his new surroundings and with FC’s season up and running with a Super League win over Bradford played in front of the fourth highest non-derby crowd at the MKM Stadium of 16,653, Hill is now even more excited about what he and the club can build.

Ahead of returning to Wigan on Saturday night, Hill said: “When you look at the squad we have got, we have a lot of young lads on long-term deals.

“I really think we can build something here which is really promising and there are a lot of Hull lads on long-term deals. Last year I looked at what Hull were doing and thought, ‘that’s for me, I’ll have a bit of that’.

“When you sign long-term deals you can’t just think about this season, you think about what is ahead of you and everyone here is young and hungry. I saw the squad being built and wanted to be a part of that. There are five of us all the same age who played against each other coming through, and we are all signed to those long deals and can hopefully stay together and have success for many years. It’s exciting for the future of this club and exciting for me to be part of that.”
