We continue to keep an eye out to see how the new Paramount+ series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy  is performing. Last week, we reported that in its debut week, the series didn’t break into the Nielsen streaming top 10. The new charts are out for the second week, and Academy is still a no show. So based on Nielsen data , Academy is underperforming the other live-action Paramount+ Star Trek series. But the new series continues to appear in other top 10 lists.

Academy still not charting for Nielsen

The Nielsen top 10 charts for the week of January 19 – 15 were just released today, covering the week of the the third episode of Starfleet Academy (“Vitus Reflix”) was released on Paramount+. Once again, the series didn’t appear in the Top 10 originals chart for the week. The top streaming show in the USA was the Netflix hit Stranger Things (1,660 million minutes viewed), with Netflix’s Upshaws coming in 10th (416 minutes). Once again, the Paramount+ hit series Landman is on the chart (moving up to number 2); it’s the only Paramount+ series that has consistently charted this year.

As noted in last week’s update, Starfleet Academy debuted in the middle of the Nielsen tracking window, so there was a possibility the series would make the chart after a full week of data came in. Back in 2024, it took Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premiere a week to make it into the Nielsen top 10.

To be fair, the competition was tougher this week. But even given that, last summer the first two weeks of Strange New Worlds season 3 made the top 10 with viewership numbers that would’ve made the chart this week.

It’s important to note that Nielsen ratings aren’t the only game in town. They have been market leaders with the much more straightforward ratings for cable and broadcast television, but streaming ratings have been more difficult to track. Last month, we reported that rival data firm Luminate showed Academy outperforming other recent Star Trek premieres for Paramount+; however, both Luminate and Nielsen agree that the Taylor Sheridan-produced shows (like Landman) have been much better performers.

Academy is charting on Paramount+

This is a bit of apples to oranges, but we have seen Starfleet Academy pop in and out of the top 10 list of TV series within Paramount+ itself. On Thursday, the show made it to #6, still outperformed mostly by shows without new episodes.

Starfleet Academy has performed even better on Amazon Channels, which tracks shows from different subscription services available through Prime Video. As of Thursday, Starfleet Academy was again ranked #4 in the USA, right behind the HBO Max series Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, trailing the Paramount+ shows School Spirits and Landman.

The website FlixPatrol shows the series has tracked higher in some international markets, making it to the top of the top 10 in Germany. The series is also consistently in the top 10 on SkyShowtime, which only recently debuted the series in more European markets.

We will continue to monitor any reported data or information on the performance of Starfleet Academy. The series was already renewed for a second season, which wraps production in Toronto next week.
