Going to the toilet is a normal part of everyday life, but it’s never easy when you suffer with constipation. If you’re someone who experiences this often, or even every now and again, you need to pay attention as a simple thing could help to remedy the issue pretty quickly.

ITV‘s Doctor Amir Khan is known for sharing all sorts of health advice online. and one piece of expert guidance is great for people who may need a little assistance when going to the loo. According to him, you just need to keep one item in your toilet to remedy the issue, and it’s something everyone should consider doing in case they ever encounter the problem.

It’s not the only trick that can aid the issue though. Previously, it was revealed adding certain foods to your diet can also help to relieve constipation too.

In a video posted on Instagram, he previously shared just what people can do to suffer less. His advice is pretty simple too, as you may only require one item to get the job done.

The doctor said: “We know that pushing hard to open your bowels increases risk of piles (haemorrhoids), anal fissures and even a rectal prolapse. But did you know that research shows the best position to be in whilst sat on the loo is with your knees higher than your hips?

“This opens up the rectum making it easier to pass poo. It mimics the natural squatting position. Also remember to drink water, eat fibre and exercise. Plus, get any worrying persistent bowel changes checked.”

He also explained that, when you sit with your feet flat on the ground, you don’t always fully relax, and this can make it more difficult to defecate. However, there’s something you can do to help.

Just put a simple footstool or box beneath your feet to aid “easier passage of stools”. This advice aligns with the natural squatting position, which has been labelled the “most efficient” method for toilet use.

As well as this, it’s recommended to hydrate generously, increase fibre intake and uphold regular exercise to stimulate consistent bowel movements. Following these simple tips could make a massive difference.

Many people admitted the trick has worked wonders for them, with one writing: “I have a squatty potty – game changer.” Another added: “Thank you Amir! You are brilliant at all these embarrassing topics!”

A third also commented: “I got advised to do this by a colorectal nurse after having bowel surgery. It really helps! Thanks Amir. These little videos you are doing are great!”

It turns out, keeping a stool in your loo could be the way forward. If you ever suffer with constipation, the doctor said it could just be the key to helping you out.

What to know about constipation

Constipation typically manifests as changes in bowel habits, like difficulty passing stools or going to the loo less. It’s a widespread issue affecting people of all ages and can be caused by inadequate fibre or hydration, dietary shifts, insufficient activity and even stress.

Fortunately, constipation often responds well to simple dietary and lifestyle adjustments. To counteract this uncomfortable condition, taking steps like following a balanced diet, drinking ample water, limiting alcohol, integrating more movement into daily routines and gradually adding more fibre to meals can help.

Although the doctor’s advice might be beneficial when you’re having difficulties, it’s always crucial to seek medical advice if you’re worried about the problem, or if it’s not improving. If there’s a big change in your bowel habits and it’s causing you to worry, it’s always recommended to reach out to your GP for guidance.
